Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) in partnership with Fencing NSW provides an opportunity for students to participate in a two-day fencing camp. The experience will kickstart students’ love of fencing and is aimed at school-aged beginners in the sport.
What is Fencing
Fencing is a combat sport where two athletes use swords to attack and defend against one anothert in order to score points
Types of Fencing
There are three different types of fencing with each of the three disciplines uses a different blade
- The foil employing a light thrust-type weapon
- The épée using a heavier thrust-type weapon
- The sabre using a light cutting and thrust-type weapon.
Olympics
Fencing is just one of five sports which have been permanent fixtures at the Olympic Games since the first modern Games were held in 1896, with men’s and women’s individual and team competitions for each discipline.
Partnership
The New South Wales Fencing Association is the State Sporting Organisation for the Olympic sport of fencing. This means NSWFA is recognised by sports authorities as the body responsible for the conduct, development and promotion of fencing in New South Wales. NSW Fencing has been a fencing powerhouse in the national arena in the last decade and continues going strong.
Term 3 – October Holiday Camp
Sydney Catholic Schools in partnership with Fencing NSW are providing an opportunity for students to participate in a two-day Fencing camp. The aim of the camp is to kickstart or further an individual’s love of fencing and will provide further opportunities in the sport. The Fencing camp caters for school-aged beginners as well as experienced students.
What to Expect
- Over the course of the camp participants will learn to fence with three pieces of equipment
- Epee
- Foil
- Focus on Fencing’s technical fundamentals
- Agility, Basic elements, Footwork, Technical drills
- Focus on Strategy and tactics
- Match strategy and tactics, Playing matches
Event Information
Dates – Tuesday 8 October and Wednesday 9 October 2024
Venue – NSW Fencing Centre, Alexandria
Age criteria – 8 year olds to 16 year olds
Cost – $160 ($80 per day)
Ability and experience level – Students divided into junior and senior age groups and experience level ensuring like-abilities in groups.
Equipment – Students can bring their fencing equipment and attire if they have it. All equipment and attire is provided.
