En-garde, pret, allez! Students get an opportunity to try their hand at a niche sport during the holiday break

In 2022 Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) launched a holiday camp as an introduction to Fencing and it is with great excitement that we announce its return for 2023.

The NSW Fencing Centre will be home to the two day camp where primary and secondary students use state of the art technology and are guided by experienced coaches to establish a love of Fencing.

Suiting up for both theory and practical training, athletes will learn correct footwork, traveling, and stance as well as an introduction to Foil, Epee, and Sabre weapons.

Fencing Coach, David Upcroft, was impressed by how quickly students could learn the principles and put them into action in 2022. He highlighted that the biggest difficulty in the sport is “making sure you can hit on target.”

“The advantage of a niche sport is there aren’t as many people to overcome. Starting young gives the best opportunity to really get you where you want to be” he said.

With Fencing being an Olympic sport, SCS is keen to get students involved and set up pathways to competitive play. April holidays will see the next camp commence on April 12 and 13. Registrations are open until Friday 31st March.
