The SCS and Cricket NSW holiday that takes athletes from the backyard to the Big Bash

School summer holidays see the rise of cricket. You’re watching it on TV, you’re playing it in the street, at the beach, in your backyard. But for 46 talented Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) students, they swapped the picket-fence boundaries for state-of-the-art equipment and fields at NSW Cricket Central.

SCS’ partnership with Cricket NSW allowed us to hold our first ever Invitational Cricket Camp this year. Students had a coaching panel full of big names like Steve Davies, Steve Jenkin, Sophie Heath, and specialist spin coach, Craig Hogan.

The day consisted of skills sessions focused on bowling, batting, fielding, and techniques for wicket-keepers. The camp ensured there was a learning opportunity for every athlete with individual feedback and corrections given.

SCS athletes also had the rare opportunity to train next to the Philippines International Team, and meet one of the world’s most dangerous fast bowlers, Mitchell Starc.

With the day of training done, it was time for the students to see where a career in Cricket could take them. With an abundance of pathways for all ages at Cricket NSW, students were given an inside look into what their future could be as they attended a Big Bash game where Thunder took on the Scorchers.

The SCS Invitational Cricket Camp also featured a leadership workshop, where they were taught the importance of leading from the front.

We look forward to holding more camps in the future in order to identify and cultivate talent from a young age.
